After the terrible battle against the Enhanced Ones, Seven and Corin find themselves on the run. With the Enhanced closing in, Seven knows they need to find other people on their side. So, when the opportunity arises to join the Zharat, one of the last surviving Untamed tribes, it seems like the perfect solution.
But the Zharat lifestyle is a far cry from what Seven’s used to. With their customs dictating that she must marry into their tribe, and her relationship with Corin breaking down, Seven knows she has to do something before it’s too late. But that’s easier said than done in a tribe where going against the rules automatically results in death.
And, with the Enhanced still out there, nowhere is truly safe for the Untamed—least of all for the most powerful Seer in the world… and Seven soon discovers how far people will go in order to ensure that she’s on their side in the War of Humanity.
Battling against the emerging web of lies, manipulation, and danger, Seven must remember who she was meant to be. Her life has never been more at stake. Nor has humanity itself.

Synopsis

When Ezra tries to blackmail Chef Yael about being trans, she throws him out of her restaurant and immediately reports him to the queen. But when police find Ezra stabbed to death, Queen Shulamit realizes he may have also tried to extort someone more dangerous than a feisty old lady. Shulamit’s royal investigation leads her to an international terrorist plot to destroy her country’s economy—and worse, her first love, Crown Princess Carolina of Imbrio, may be involved. This is a love story between wives, between queen and country, and between farmers and the crops they grow.

Excerpt

“What’s that one? It looks like a map.” Shulamit shifted papers around. “Mmm,” she agreed, turning the paper slightly and studying it more closely. “It’s a map of Perach. But I don’t know what all this mess is.” She squinted and shook her head. “I don’t know; it looks familiar, somehow.” “Well, you do run the country.” “This line… these patterns…” With one arm folded across her midsection and the other arm upright so that her fist rested against her nose, Shulamit raked her memories. Those swirly bits. That pair of streaks. Why did they look so familiar? Why did she feel like she’d seen it before, what seemed like ages ago before the emotional upheaval of visiting Imbrio again and seeing Carolina? “Oh, my God!” Heat flared in Shulamit’s cheeks. “Rivka, this makes no sense, but—Guard! Who’s out there?” One of the guards appeared at the doorway. “Majesty?” Shulamit held out one pointing finger. “Can you please bring me my latest notes on our agricultural pests?” “Absolutely, Majesty.” He disappeared into the sunlight. Rivka squinted at her. “I don’t get it.” “You think I do?” Shulamit skin tingled as she waited for the papers to show up and either prove her wrong or show that she was absolutely right, thus opening up nothing but a cartload of further questions. Both hands fidgeted with the ends of her filmy yellow scarf. Shulamit felt like every second was bloated and lazy until the guard reappeared. Where was he? Finally, the requested papers arrived, and she tore into them with such ferocity that several fell onto the floor and had to be retrieved. “There!” she finally exclaimed triumphantly. “What?” Rivka leaned over her shoulder eagerly, and Shulamit heard a soft thud as Isaac leapt off Riv’s shoulder onto the back of her throne to get a better view. “The olive blight,” said Shulamit, her lips barely moving as she tried to make sense of the completely unexpected connection. “Ezra drew a map of the olive blight, and put it in the middle of his blackmail notes.” “Is there anything else on the paper?” said Isaac in his normal voice. Shulamit turned it over. “Oh, I’m so nervous, I’m not thinking straight. This is the map I already had.” She flipped over the correct parchment. In Ezra’s lazy scrawl, it said, Imbrian man (Name: Rui?) *possibly leader Imbrian man with missing tooth. Drinks like a fish. Perachi woman (from Lovely Valley?) Money-minded. Unknown man (Light skinned. Imbrian?) Unknown woman (Perachi?) Who is “AndrĂ©?” “There is no way this means anything good.” Thoughts whirled through Shulamit’s mind, thoughts that she was afraid to put to words. What did Imbrio have to do with agricultural pests? What about—what about Carolina? “Malkeleh,” said Isaac, interrupting her mental maelstrom. “Let me see Ezra’s map again.” Shulamit flipped the paper back over. “Look,” said Isaac. “His map—the infestation goes down the river straight into the Lovely Valley.” Shulamit shook her head slowly and groped around for Rivka’s hand. She clung to her friend’s arm with both hands like it was a bellpull, then hugged it tightly to her chest. “Whatever this is, we have to stop it. We have to stop them.

Author Extra: The Clawed Monet by A.M. Bostwick

Author Extra: from The Great Cat Nap:

Her striking beauty stared up at me from the front page of the Monday edition of The Daily Reporter. Even from the black-and-white mug shot published on recycled newsprint, it was evident pain-soaked tears were streaming from her bloodshot, baby blue eyes.
Yeah, being accused of first-degree, cold-blooded murder could do that to a pretty girl’s face.
            Name’s Ace, and I’m a reporter.
            I’m also a cat.
I didn’t have time to think about the newspaper hitting stands and driveways tomorrow morning shattering the community’s view of lovely socialite Miss Claire Emerson. Nor did I have time to crash for a Sunday evening nap after a hectic deadline; someone was tapping on the front door.
Padding a few steps, I peered through the extra large mail slot, bringing in a waft of steaming July humidity. I did a double-take. A stunning white Persian wearing nothing but an anxious expression was trying to get my attention.
            She got it.
Straightening my whiskers, I held open the door to let her in. She gracefully leapt through and landed at my side in a huff. We were the only ones in the dark office.
“Is this how you welcome guests? Like newspapers being tossed onto dirty driveways?” she demanded. Her big, round eyes were blue, just like Claire Emerson’s. I could smell the hot summer on her fur.
“Only if they’re interrupting my nap. Name’s Ace. What can I help you with?”
“I know who you are, Ace,” she said haughtily. Her flawless profile stood out starkly against the outdated, paneled, ugly walls of the newspaper office. “Why do you think I came all the way downtown in this filth? This traffic? This heat?” She paused to shake her paws free of imaginary grime. The Persian eyed me up and down. “I need you to take a case.”
“Detective work?” I questioned, half laughing.
            “Yes, sir.”
“Ma’am, I’m a reporter. I don’t handle detective cases,” I said, yawning. While I was intrigued by the stunning feline, it was obvious this was going the same place as when dogs chase their tails. Nowhere.
“But you must help me in my plight!” she demanded, pursing her mouth and scrunching her all too-pink nose.
I didn’t flinch a whisker. “I can’t get my paws dirty becoming a slanted reporter on the biggest story of the year. I’d be a cat marked for trouble.”
“You must!” she squealed. I suddenly wished I had gone home with Max that night, my human companion and the newspaper’s city editor. “Pleeeease!
I sighed. Of all the rundown newspapers in all the cities, she had to walk into mine. “I won’t do it,” I replied.
The Persian opened her mouth to protest, but didn’t utter a word. Her dainty, furry face was suddenly overcome by soft horror. She stared at the front page of tomorrow’s paper. The headline blared “EMERSON ARRESTED, CHARGED WITH MURDER.”
“Oh, you can’t. You just can’t!” she cried. “Are you actually going to print this rubbish?”
I stood on the stack of Monday editions, examining her. She looked ready to crumple into kitty litter dust. “Sorry, I didn’t get your name?”
“My name is Angel,” she said slowly, still staring at the article. “Claire is my human companion. We live together at The Heights. And you have to help me.”
I took a step back. Or rather, four steps. Whoa, this was a high-class cat. One who was in a lot of trouble, if you asked me.
            It’d be a great story.
But she wasn’t here for an interview.
Angel looked into my eyes. “Oh, Ace, you just have to help us.”
Holy cats. With a pile of evidence ripe to convict and nothing to go on to prove Claire’s innocence, I wasn’t able to promise anything. I exhaled; I’d always been a sucker for a pretty face.
“You can pay in tuna fish?”
“That’s kind of steep,” she hedged, sniffling.
“Well, a cat’s gotta eat. And I’m on a reporter’s salary.” I flicked my tail toward a bag of dry cat food by the entryway. Kuddly Kitty Krunchies. Awful stuff.
“Okay, we have an agreement,” Angel said, extending a paw.

            I took it.

Author Extra: Before the New Moon Rises by Cathy Hird

When Poseidon's ambition is thwarted (as told in  Moon of the Goddess), Princess Thalassai expects to enjoy the luxury of peace in the valley of Ephyra. Instead, the Earthshaker's revenge strikes like forked lightning. He recruits Aphoron, disgraced prince of Ephyra, to set off an attack on her home city. The god then releases a monster shark to shut down trade and lays a sleeping spell on the four kings who hold sway in the lands claimed by the ancient goddess Eurynome.
With the king under Poseidon's spell, Thalassai struggles to maintain order in the city. Her fiancé Brizo sets sail to defeat the monster shark, but in the first encounter, the shark destroys the ship's rudder and oars. Her brother Melanion chases after Aphoron and uncovers the prince's plan to attack their city. As other Olympian gods who are angry with Poseidon are drawn into the fray, conflict threatens to engulf the lands of Greece. Will it spread to the mountain of the gods? Will the young leaders find a way to defeat the Earthshaker's plans and restore peace?

The ancient city of Mycenae stood as a giant among the mythical places in Greece. While stories of the city endured, Mycenae itself disappeared into the mists of time. Other places that Homer described kept a prominent place. Athens is the airport a visitor flies into, and the ancient acropolis still towers over the city. Modern Corinth provides a gateway to the ancient city. But Mycenae had to be uncovered by the persistence of the archeologist Schliemann. Thanks to his work, we can visit the lion gates of the fabled city and admire the golden death mask of King Agamemnon.

King Agamemnon was, by all the poets' accounts, the one who led the mission against Troy to rescue captured Helen. He was one of the few to return to the homeland. His return had tragic consequences but that is another story.

It is Agamemnon's father Atreus who enters the tale I tell. According to the stories, young Atreus followed the goddess Artemis. The wit and strength of the warrior goddess embodied the skills he sought. He promised her that if a sheep with a golden fleece appeared in his flock, he would offer it at her temple. When such a ewe appeared, however, the golden beauty seduced him. He kept the animal and its fleece for himself.

Family competition flared, leading him and his brother Thyestes to murder their stepbrother. The two were banished for this breach of family loyalty. Taken in by the king of Mycenae, they became his regents when he went to lead a battle against the sons of Herakles.

When that king died in battle, both the brothers desired his throne. Thyestes suggested that the one who presented a golden fleece should rule. Atreus readily agreed, given that he held such a fleece. Alas, because his wife knew he had betrayed Artemis, she had already stolen the fleece and given it to Thyestes, her lover. Though Thyestes took the throne, Atreus believed that the king of gods wanted him to rule this important city. He asked Zeus to make the sun rise in the west and set in the east. On the day this happened, Atreus was crowned king in Mycenae.

Thyestes sought the advice of the oracle at Delphi to retrieve the place he thought he earned. There by the light of fire he saw a beautiful girl bathing in a stream. He took her by force, but left his sword with her to show the identity of the father of her child. He did not know that this was his daughter, Pelopia.

Searching for Thyestes, either to welcome him back or take his revenge--different poets tell the tale differently--Atreus came upon Pelopia and took her for his wife. He had already put aside the woman who was unfaithful to him by stealing the golden fleece. He believed the son Pelopia bore was his and named the boy Aegistus.

Anger at his brother's betrayal grew in Atreus. He sent his sent his adult sons Agamemnon and Menelaus to Delphi to ask the oracle for help. They found Thyestes at Delphi, bound him and carried him back to Mycenae. Atreus ordered his youngest son Aegistus to behead Thyestes, but when he drew his sword, Thyestes recognized the weapon and claimed that the boy was his son.

Atreus demanded that his wife Pelopia come and explain. She acknowledged to him that she was already pregnant when they married.  Thyestes cried out in sadness and named his misdeed. Horrified that she bore her father's son, Pelopia took her own life with the sword that identified her son's father.

Thyestes demanded that Aegistus kill Atreus, which he did, again with the same sword. Agamemnon and Menelaus escaped, taking refuge in Sparta, where they met the king's two daughters, Helen and Clytemnestra. Another story began.

Before the New Moon Rises takes place once Atreus has established a firm rule in Mycenae before he begins seeking his brother again.
